A unique addition to our well-stocked kitchen
I bought this as a birthday gift for my fellow foodie boyfriend, and he loves it!! He seasoned it himself, then got right to work making pesto. He also made guacamole and has plans to make salsas as well. The pesto comes out amazing. The leaves stay green and the nuts come out in slightly different sizes which adds great texture. This molcajete is large and heavy enough, I think we'll be using it for a long time to come.

Love it
This did not come packaged as advertised. Bubble wrapped instead. Still, I'm very happy with it. I only use it to grind black pepper and cumin seeds, for which it is very efficient. I was expecting to have to take a wire grinding tool to it to prep it for use, but it came ready to use. The first batch of ground dry rice came out clean. It does look more like the RSVP brand molcajete then that shown by MexGrocer. Whatever. I like it.

Useless as a kitchen item.
I have no idea how I am supposed to use this thing to grind food, as it is all gritty and crumbly. If someone wants to have this as a decoration, that's one thing. But it is useless as a kitchen tool. Waste of money.

Awesome Molcajete !
Even though it was Christmas time I still received the bowl days before it said which was really convenient ! I gave it to my mom as a gift and shes excited to use it. No cracks or pieces missing, and authentic looking as well.

Meh...
Bought this as a surprise gift for my wife. It looks nice and authentic, but there is something to point out...cleaning it SUCKS. The volcano rock is soo porous that it wont hold water to let soap stand. There are still stuck bits of avocado since the first time she tried to use it. Also scratched the crap out of our stainless steel sink. Too rough of a material in my opinion...its somewhere back in its box in a cabinet now...

Not as advertised
I have another molcajete that I purchased in Mexico many years ago. It's an outstanding sample, made of very heavy and very dark black volcanic stone, both the mortar and the pestle. I wanted to purchase one for my daughter who has always wanted one since we used ours frequently to make "guisote", hot sauce, and other Mexican favorites. The first one arrived not as shown. There was no decorative box as pictured, it did not have any documentation. It was a raw molcajete simply wrapped in bubble wrap, put in a box with some additional foam around it and shipped like that. Needless to say, it arrived damaged. One of the "feet" was broken and we noticed also that the stone that the molcajete mortar was made of was inferior, light and not dark and dense like the one we had at home. The pestle was ok. It was made of the right stuff, dense and hard and dark.We went online and filled out a damaged item report with Amazon, which was forwarded to the vendor. They responded that there was no need to ship it back, they would simply send out a new one. A new one arrived and it was the same thing as before, same packing method, same plain box, etc. But this time the combo was not broken. Unfortunately, the mortar was still made out of crappy stone and not dense and black as advertised. The pestle was ok as before, nice and dense.Since this was a gift, I would have liked it to come in the decorative box as pictured. I really also would have liked it to be made of the "right stuff". This rock will not be as dense and will end up producing much more grit in the food that is processed with it. I will still give it to my daughter, but I will be searching in local markets as well as other sources to find a real set.It would behoove the vendors to at least show what you will really get, as opposed to what you see in the picture. I'm going to add photos of what we got so everyone can be aware of what they will actually receive. If this is just going to be used as a decorative thing, or to simply serve salsa at a table and not actually used to grind spices and such, then this is fine. If you are intending to use this to grind stuff and want the stone to not grind off into your spices, then forget about this.

Authentic Large Molcajete
This is an authentic molcajete so be prepared to season it which requires some work but its worth it. Ours is still new and we look forward to using it for years to come. The more you use it the better it gets!
